The First Day: Supper and the Evening
If you are extremely hungry before supper, drink some juice, eat half a grapefruit,
or anything else that will prevent your seeking for the "before dinner cigarettes".
During the meal itself eat slowly and try to enjoy every bite so that the food will be
the most appetizing food you’ve eaten this day; for desert take a fruit. A fresh fruit
is the best thing - and then leave the table quickly, brush your teeth and wash
your mouth.
After supper take a long walk. Maybe you’ll even be able to gather the whole family
for that walk. Try to vary the walk by visiting regions of the city you’ve never seen
before, a new shopping mall etc. Plan your evening schedule in advance - use your
recording chart. For example: if you usually watch TV, don’t do it this evening and
the next evening as well. Don’t do any activity that was somehow connected to smoking
cigarettes: a card game, drinking beer etc. Take care that every activity you’ll
choose will distract you from smoking: a movie, washing the car, knitting, ping-pong.
In brief, try to keep your mind busy until you go to sleep.
Before you lay yourself down to sleep, reward yourself with a vegetable or a sandwich,
take a warmish shower, and put the glass of water near your bed. This is it. The day
has passed and you’ve made it - you haven’t smoked for 24 hours.
Remember: if it is hard for you to fall asleep take a glass of warm milk, and
read for 20-30 minutes. If your doctor permits it, take a tranquilizer. Sweet dreams.
